Mortgages
What documents do mortgage advisers normally ask for?
Last reviewed: 3 October 2026
The brief answer
Commonly: photo ID, proof of address, recent payslips, bank statements, proof of deposit and, where relevant, proof of your right to live in the UK. Self-employed applicants usually need more. Your adviser will confirm exactly what is needed.
In plain English
Identity and address: a passport or other accepted ID and recent proof of address. Lenders may ask for address history covering several years.
Income: recent payslips and possibly your P60. If you are self-employed, expect to provide tax calculations, tax year overviews or accounts.
Bank statements: these show your income arriving and your regular spending. Deposit evidence: statements showing how your savings built up. If family is helping, a signed gift letter and possibly their ID and statements.
Money from abroad: if any funds came from outside the UK, keep a clear trail of transfers and documents. Foreign-language documents may need translation — ask what format is accepted.

Having documents ready speeds up both your AIP and your full application, and avoids last-minute stress.
